After a team day, the daily grind often wins again. Except after this one.

Travel to the future, online or on location, on your own or as a team. There you discover groundbreaking ideas that you bring back to today, and that you want to get started on right away.

Ideal for a personal challenge, a team day or next year’s strategic plan.

How did this come about?

Good intentions from a training course, a team day or a strategy session often lose out to the rush of the day.

Change and innovation programmes often get stuck on stubborn patterns and culture. People do not necessarily like change, unless you make them long for it. The transformation method of the Trip to the Future puts them on that track:

  • You see it together. The year in which it has worked out perfectly, with all your senses. What you have seen for yourself, you want to achieve; that is what you long for.
  • Small steps towards it. Looking back from that year: what was the next step, who took it, what did we leave behind?
  • Supported before the start. The team draws the route itself. The support is there before the plan even exists.
  • Focus that lasts. On the wall, in the Monday morning meeting. Because it is your agreement and because it is strongly visual.

This is what your route map looks like

Not one big step, but a series of small ones. Clearly structured, drawn by you or your team.

How does this work in the team session of the Trip to the Future, for example? The top five discoveries from the future, five questions per discovery. The team draws it themselves, standing around the table. Within 24 hours it is hanging on your wall. Nobody can get around it any more.

Three ways to get on board

Choose your route.

How do you get that one colleague or your team moving? And how do you design a strategy for next year that responds to the major changes under way? Choose the route that fits your question.

Personal, as a team or as an organisation

The Trip is the kick-off. Then the real work begins.

A personal development question. A change programme in your team. Or a large innovation programme or new service in your organisation. It always starts the same way: with the Trip to the Future you create one picture of what you are striving for. Then comes the programme: first find the right problem, then solve the problem right.

1Kick-off · the TripOne shared picture

In half a day to the year in which it has worked out. Back with the dot on the horizon and the first actions in a route map. This is the kick-off, then the real work begins.

2DiscoverThe right problem

Who is really affected, and how badly? Research it with users and customers, or with yourself when it is about your own development. Make no assumptions.

3SolveDeveloping the solution

Prototypes, tests and personal choices, for your organisation, your team or yourself. What works, and what do we leave behind? Inspired by techniques from NLP (neuro-linguistic programming).

4DoBuild, launch or apply

Team, product and first customers. Or putting your personal development plan into practice. With check-in moments until it stands on its own.

This approach works at a personal level, at team level and at strategic level.
Together with others, I am building two innovative services myself, entirely according to this approach. For both I am still looking for partners I want to build with and who want to build with me.

Your tour guide

I have carried this picture with me for years.

For twenty-seven years, at Efteling, Sanoma, ING and ABN AMRO among others, I saw time and again how much difference it makes whether people are truly connected. And how often a good plan runs aground the Monday after.

The Trip to the Future began 17 years ago as a game and grew into the starting process of Holland Future Center: a place where boards, management teams and other teams explore, experiment and build an organisation of the future together. From yourself, from your team, from your organisation.

Why do I do this? My mission is first of all to make people long for a positive future, especially in this rapidly changing world, and then to help them take concrete steps towards it. Read more on the mission page.
